Japan’s maritime sector has reached a monumental milestone with the successful completion of autonomous navigation trials for a commercial cargo vessel, signaling a new era for global shipping. Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” LINE), a leading name in the industry, proudly announced the conclusion of these rigorous trials, conducted as part of The Nippon Foundation’s ambitious MEGURI2040 Fully Autonomous Ship Project. The vessel at the heart of this breakthrough, the HOKUREN MARU No.2, a 173-meter Roll-on/Roll-off (RORO) ship operated by Kawasaki Kinkai Kisen Kaisha, successfully navigated its route between Kushiro in Hokkaido and Hitachi in Ibaraki. Following the trials, it received autonomous vessel certification from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai on January 27, 2026, and passed a comprehensive national inspection by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on February 9, 2026. This dual certification is particularly significant as it marks the first time a RORO vessel in Japan has achieved such high standards for autonomous operation.

Crucially, this approval now permits the HOKUREN MARU No.2 to operate with Level 4 automation, signifying a ‘Fully Autonomous Ship.’ At this advanced degree, the vessel’s operating system is capable of making independent decisions and executing actions, even during commercial voyages, under specific conditions.
