Dutch shipping and logistics powerhouses Vertom and Universal Africa Lines (UAL) have unveiled plans to combine their operations, a strategic move designed to significantly expand their reach across critical breakbulk, project cargo, and container trades. This combination is set to create a formidable entity in the global maritime sector, enhancing service capabilities and market footprint.

The proposed transaction will integrate Vertom’s extensive shortsea shipping network and its fleet of over 80 vessels with UAL’s established liner and project cargo operations, which primarily serve the Atlantic basin and Africa. While merging their business functions, both companies have affirmed their commitment to maintaining their individual brand identities and continuing to operate under their existing names. This approach aims to leverage the strengths of both entities while exploring deeper cooperation in areas such as commercial activities, fleet deployment, and customer services.

Arjan de Jong, Chief Executive of Vertom, emphasized the strategic rationale behind the combination. “By combining our fleets, networks, and expertise, we are creating a stronger, more competitive platform that enhances our market position and broadens our service offering,” De Jong stated, highlighting the expected strengthening of both companies’ positions in the liner and multipurpose shipping markets.

Echoing this sentiment, Roger Jungblut, Chief Executive of UAL, noted the shared operational philosophy between the two firms. “We share a similar approach to shipping and logistics services and see significant opportunities to strengthen our capabilities through closer cooperation,” Jungblut commented.

The combined entity is expected to establish a broader, more integrated network, linking key regions globally:

Furthermore, the combination will build upon UAL’s existing intra-African and Caribbean services, creating a truly interconnected maritime logistics solution.

Vertom, headquartered in Rhoon near Rotterdam, has grown into one of Europe’s largest shortsea operators since its establishment in 1974. The company’s diverse operations span shipping, freight forwarding, tanker chartering, port agency, and liner services, employing approximately 1,000 people worldwide.

UAL, founded in 1973 and based in Capelle aan den IJssel, specializes in multipurpose liner shipping and logistics, with a particular focus on oil and gas-related cargoes. Its fleet of geared multipurpose vessels and landing craft serves critical trades connecting Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, the US Gulf, and South America.

This strategic combination is anticipated to yield several key benefits:
