SBM Offshore, the renowned Dutch floater expert, has announced a strategic agreement with Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) for the divestment of a 45% ownership interest in the special purpose companies associated with the lease and operation of the FSO Chalchi. This significant transaction underscores evolving partnerships within the global offshore energy sector.

Following the completion of this agreement, SBM Offshore will retain its position as the majority shareholder, holding a 55% ownership interest. The deal highlights a collaborative approach to major energy infrastructure projects, leveraging the expertise of both industry leaders.

The FSO Chalchi, currently under construction, is poised to play a crucial role in the upcoming operations. It will be managed under a comprehensive 20-year lease and operate contract with Woodside Energy, a key player in the energy market.

Key specifications and operational details of the FSO Chalchi include:

  • Hull Type: Based on a robust suezmax-type hull, ensuring substantial capacity and stability.
  • Mooring System: Equipped with a sophisticated disconnectable turret mooring system, meticulously designed by SBM Offshore, allowing for safe disconnection in adverse weather conditions.
  • Storage Capacity: Capable of storing approximately 950,000 barrels of crude oil, facilitating efficient offshore production logistics.
  • Deployment Depth: Designed to be moored in challenging water depths of about 2,500 meters.

The unit is slated for deployment at the Trion field, a strategically important location situated 180 km off the Mexican coastline and just 30 km south of the US-Mexico maritime border. The Trion project itself is a collaborative joint venture between its operator, Woodside, and its esteemed partner, Pemex.

This transaction not only strengthens the financial position of SBM Offshore but also solidifies the partnership with NYK, paving the way for future collaborations in complex offshore developments.
