India is making significant strides in maritime innovation, announcing plans for compact 200 MW nuclear power reactors that could revolutionize commercial shipping. This development positions India at the forefront of sustainable maritime solutions.

Scientists at the esteemed Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) are actively developing two nuclear reactor models, with capacities of 55 MW and 200 MW. While initially conceived for captive power plants serving energy-intensive industries such as cement manufacturing, their remarkably compact design renders them highly suitable for integration into marine vessels, as reported by ET Infra.

“Nuclear power is generated by causing nuclear fission to create heat, which in turn produces electricity. You can place the reactor wherever you need it—even on a ship,” a senior official explained, highlighting the versatility of this advanced technology.

This initiative aligns perfectly with recent international maritime regulatory advancements. In June, the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Safety Committee (MSC 110) approved crucial revisions to the SOLAS Convention, specifically paving the way for the safe inclusion of emerging technologies like Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in shipping.

Nuclear power and propulsion have garnered considerable attention recently. Christopher J. Wiernicki, Chairman and CEO of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), has consistently emphasized nuclear energy’s transformative potential, notably during the ARGO: New Nuclear for Greek Maritime Summit and London International Shipping Week 2025. He firmly stated that nuclear power is no longer a distant prospect but a tangible solution for the maritime industry.

Leading classification societies are also actively engaged. Lloyd’s Register (LR) is collaborating with Deployable Energy to support the safe integration of micro-nuclear reactor technology for ship propulsion, having released a comprehensive roadmap outlining the steps toward safe adoption. Furthermore, the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) and DNV have published recent reports exploring the opportunities, challenges, and pathways for integrating nuclear technology into commercial shipping. These reports universally recognize nuclear power as a highly promising solution for significantly reducing emissions and enhancing operational efficiency across the maritime sector.
