Salvage crews in Fiji are working tirelessly to avert a potential environmental disaster after the cruise ship Fiji Princess ran aground near the pristine shores of Monuriki Island. The incident, which occurred on April 4, has prompted an urgent response to prevent a significant oil spill in Fiji’s delicate marine environment.

The vessel reportedly struck a reef, leading to immediate concerns for its structural integrity. Fortunately, all 30 passengers and 17 of the 31 crew members were safely evacuated on the same day, with no injuries reported, according to Fiji’s maritime rescue agency.

Upon initial assessment on April 4, the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) confirmed serious damage to the vessel’s rear left side, including critical steering equipment, and extensive damage underneath the hull. The Fiji Princess also suffered engine failure and was observed taking on water, compounding the challenges faced by emergency responders. Rough seas in the immediate aftermath initially hampered a full underwater inspection.

With approximately 20,000 litres of diesel fuel on board, MSAF spokespersons emphasized that minimizing the risk of pollution is the paramount priority. While specialized oil spill response equipment has been brought to the scene as a precautionary measure, adverse sea conditions have so far prevented its deployment. Encouragingly, initial inspections revealed no signs that the fuel tanks had been compromised.

Dedicated salvage teams, bolstered by support from an Australian specialist, are now focused on the critical task of safely removing all fuel and oil from the grounded vessel. Further comprehensive recovery operations are slated to commence once weather conditions improve, ensuring the safety of personnel and the marine ecosystem.
