Copenhagen, Denmark – The Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) has unveiled a significant new campaign aimed at fostering respectful and inclusive working environments across Danish-flagged vessels. Recognizing that a healthy workplace is paramount for **crew well-being**, operational safety, and the long-term vitality of the **maritime industry**, this initiative seeks to cultivate a stronger culture of respect and positive communication at sea.

Developed in close cooperation with Danish Shipping and key maritime trade unions, the campaign emerges as a direct follow-up to a comprehensive study that highlighted issues of **bullying and harassment** within the Danish maritime sector. It forms a vital part of a broader national effort to enhance the **psychosocial working environment** for **seafarers**, ensuring all crew members feel safe, valued, and respected.

Safety on board extends far beyond physical protection; it encompasses creating an atmosphere where every individual feels respected, valued, and secure, both during working hours and in their personal time. A truly safe workplace is fundamentally built on how crew members interact with one another.

**Unacceptable Behaviors Addressed**
The campaign unequivocally states that harassment, bullying, shouting, personal insults, unwanted sexual attention, and negative gossip have no place aboard Danish ships. Behaviors often dismissed as “just a joke” can inflict serious harm on individuals and degrade the overall working environment.

**Mutual Respect and Collective Responsibility**
Mutual respect also mandates the recognition and acceptance of diversity. Every seafarer, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, sexuality, culture, or background, is entitled to dignity and fairness. Furthermore, all crew members share a collective responsibility to speak up against inappropriate or offensive behavior, as silence can perpetuate harmful situations.

Ship officers bear a crucial responsibility in maintaining a safe and respectful community on board. Crew members are actively encouraged to seek support and voice concerns whenever something feels amiss.

**Leadership Endorsement**
Rikke Wetter Olufsen, Deputy Director General of the **Danish Maritime Authority**, underscored the campaign’s importance: “Danish shipping is one of Denmark’s strongest international strengths. But behind the ships are people. That is why it is important that we work actively to ensure a working environment characterised by respect, trust and decent behaviour. I am pleased that shipping companies, seafarers and authorities are standing together behind this campaign.”

While acknowledging that the campaign alone may not resolve all challenges, Olufsen emphasized its role in “creating the conversations and awareness needed to prevent bullying and harassment on board Danish ships.” The initiative features a compelling film, a joint manifesto, and a suite of communication materials designed to stimulate dialogue about the psychosocial working environment at sea.

**The ‘Respect – Manifesto’**
The campaign’s cornerstone is its **’Respect – Manifesto’**, articulating core principles for a better onboard experience:
* **Safety Aboard is Essential:** Both at work and during leisure.
* **Interaction Matters:** Given long periods at sea, how crew members interact is crucial.
* **Room for Differences, No Room for Harm:** While diversity is embraced, yelling, humiliation, or offensive remarks (even ‘in jest’) are unacceptable.
* **Personal Responsibility:** Everyone is accountable for their tone and relationships, especially during stressful times.
* **Support and Speak Up:** Encourage mental fortitude, mutual help, and addressing issues when they arise.
* **Management’s Role:** Leadership holds particular responsibility for fostering a functional community and should be involved in problem-solving.
* **Respect Makes a Difference:** Emphasizing that respectful behavior genuinely improves life for all on board.

Launched on June 15, 2026, the campaign materials will be distributed to Danish-flagged ships and widely promoted across digital and social media channels, reinforcing Denmark’s commitment to a world-leading, humane maritime sector.
